2027: Tinubu, Yilwatda charge APC women leaders to sustain grassroots engagement

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, have urged women leaders of the party to intensify grassroots mobilisation and assured them of greater inclusion in governance ahead of future electoral contests, including the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during separate engagements with APC women leaders drawn from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), both leaders stressed the critical role women play in sustaining the party’s electoral strength and expanding its grassroots support base.

At a meeting with APC women leaders, the First Lady said political success depended more on effective grassroots engagement than on gender considerations, stressing that politicians who remain connected to the people are more likely to sustain public confidence and electoral support.

“Politics is not about gender; it is about numbers. If you do not connect with the grassroots, you cannot win their trust,” she said.

Tinubu noted that her sustained engagement with constituents during her time in the Senate contributed significantly to her political success, recalling that she held quarterly town hall meetings throughout her eight-year tenure.

“I connect with the grassroots. I am still the only woman on record who held town hall meetings every quarter for eight consecutive years,” she stated.

She cautioned political office holders against becoming inaccessible after securing electoral victories, maintaining that continuous engagement with constituents remained essential for effective leadership.

“You have to connect with the people. If I find it difficult to reach you as an office holder, how do you expect your constituents to reach you?” she asked.

The First Lady also underscored the importance of trust in political organisation and party building, saying supporters must feel valued, respected and included beyond election periods.

“You have to build trust and connection. Once that is missing, you cannot win,” she added.

Calling for more structured mobilisation efforts at the grassroots, Senator Tinubu urged the APC women’s wing to strengthen voter education, community engagement and sensitisation programmes across the country.

Earlier, APC National Women Leader, Dr Mary Alile Idele, commended the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative and described the party’s women’s wing as one of the strongest grassroots mobilisation platforms in the country.

Meanwhile, the APC National Chairman, Prof Yilwatda, assured Nigerian women of greater inclusion and participation in governance, declaring that the party was committed to securing more elective and appointive positions for women in the forthcoming political dispensation.

Yilwatda gave the assurance yesterday when he received Idele alongside the six Zonal Women Leaders and State Women Leaders from across the federation at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

Addressing the delegation, the APC chairman paid tribute to the sacrifices, resilience and commitment of women, describing them as the enduring pillars upon which the party’s successes had been built.

“You are the pillars of this party in rain and sunshine. During campaigns, you are there. During elections, you are there. In virtually every activity of the party, you are always present and actively involved,” he said.

The meeting with the First Lady ended with the presentation of eight buses to APC women leaders representing different geopolitical zones of the country to support mobilisation and party activities at the grassroots.
