2027: APC Has A Better Arrangement Than Opposition Coalition — Akande

A former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, has weighed in on the current political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, but believes that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains more structurally prepared than the opposition to retain power.

Speaking on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, Akande criticised the current state of the opposition.

He said that while the APC has its challenges, the opposition appears disorganized and without a clear political identity.

“I think APC has better arrangements,” Akande said on the show

He said the opposition has allowed a dominant narrative to thrive — one that appears fixated on removing President Bola Tinubu without presenting viable policy alternatives.

Akande warned Nigerians not to fall for recycled political rhetoric and said, “We need new faces, but they still have old folks”.

“The characters at the forefront are not the ones that can get the job done,” he said. “Nigerians would not be inspired by the same old personal vendetta politics.”

He, however, praised activist and politician Omoyele Sowore for attempting to break the mold and push new narratives in Nigerian politics.

His comment came a day after Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was the Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said his principal, Peter Obi, can run for the presidency without him.

He questioned the political unity between Obi and Baba-Ahmed. According to him, the former LP vice presidential candidate’s recent remark about Obi running without him reflects a deeper internal crisis.

“If the coalition is serious, Datti should be at the forefront to assure Nigerians of real change,” Akande said.

The former political aide criticized the lack of a clear manifesto and leadership identity within the LP.

While also speaking about developments within the APC, Akande said the expected appointment of a new party chairman could provide an opportunity for President Tinubu to unify the APC ahead of 2027.

“I think it is reasonable that there would be a new chairman today,” he said, referring to the high-level meeting of the APC leaders in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

He stressed the importance of strengthening internal unity within the APC, describing recent opposition moves as largely superficial.

“There’s a visible onslaught toward the APC, but it’s easier to see where things are headed within the ruling party,” Akande said.

He urged more civic engagement and issue-driven politics, emphasizing the
need to focus on key challenges such as poverty alleviation, anti-corruption reforms, and institutional strengthening.
