Tinubu hails Babangida at 84, praises military career, leadership

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), on his 84th birthday, describing him as a leader whose tenure left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined family, friends, and associates of the former Nigerian leader to celebrate the milestone.

Tinubu commended Babangida’s distinguished military career, recalling his service as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, commander of the 4 Reconnaissance Regiment, commander of the Armoured Corps, director of Army Staff Duties and Plans, and Chief of Army Staff.

The President noted that Babangida’s eight-year rule as head of state delivered major infrastructure projects, including the Third Mainland Bridge, alongside economic reforms that opened up Nigeria’s economy. He also highlighted the establishment of key security and safety institutions such as the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Tinubu further acknowledged Babangida’s role in creating new states and relocating Nigeria’s federal capital from Lagos to Abuja.

“While thanking him for his sacrifice and leadership, President Tinubu prays to Almighty Allah to grant the former military leader more years and renewed strength,” the statement read.

President Bola Tinubu has approved automatic employment for the four children of the late Head of the Civil Service of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Dr Grace Adayilo who recently passed on. FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, announced this on Saturday during the funeral service held at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, where top government officials, civil servants, family and friends gathered to pay their last respects to the late Adayilo.
