Tinubu to New Media Influencers: Build Nigeria, not Chaos

President Bola Tinubu has called on young Nigerians active in the digital media space to use their growing influence to promote national unity, economic opportunity, and social responsibility, rather than division and misinformation.

Speaking at the Progressives Digital Media Summit on Friday, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” the President praised the ingenuity and resilience of Nigeria’s youth in building online platforms that drive innovation, civic engagement, and social change.

“Digital media is not just a tool for communication, it is now a central driver of economic growth and representation. You are not waiting for the future; you are building it,” Tinubu said.

He urged creators to verify information before sharing, stressing that their digital reach must be accompanied by a collective sense of purpose.

“Use your influence to foster unity, not division. Build businesses, create uplifting content, and be forces for progress,” the President added.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to digital innovation through initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Fund and support for tech start-ups.

He, however, warned against the threats posed by misinformation and cyber abuse.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, also praised the role of digital media actors in projecting Nigeria positively, calling them the “vanguard of a reborn Nigeria.”

In his goodwill message, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, acknowledged the dual role of digital media as both a force for good and a threat when misused.

Citing global examples, he warned of the dangers of unregulated platforms and the rise of AI-generated disinformation.

“Social media is not always fair or accurate. Divisive posts, deepfakes, and clickbait often dominate the narrative. Misinformation spreads faster than the truth,” he said, expressing hope that the summit would shape a stronger, more responsible digital culture.

Summit convener and Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Segun Dada, described digital media as a powerful engine for influence and innovation.

He called for its responsible use in service of national development while safeguarding against its inherent risks
