Tinubu’s reforms politically sensitive but necessary – Commissioner

President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, though politically sensitive, are vital to building a stronger and more competitive Nigeria.

Commissioner for Communications in Kwara State, Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, stated this during the 2025 Press Week and 45th anniversary of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council.

The event was themed “The Renewed Hope Agenda: A Mid-Term Appraisal of President Tinubu’s Reforms, Success and Prospects”.

Represented by the Director of Information Services, Alhaji Olayinka Salau, Olukoju outlined the Renewed Hope Agenda as a broad framework aimed at driving economic growth, improving security, boosting infrastructure, expanding social welfare, and empowering youth.

She said the removal of fuel subsidy, unification of exchange rates, and tax reforms were decisive steps taken to put the country on the right part.

According to her, the government has saved over ₦1 trillion from subsidy removal, improved crude oil production, and attracted growing foreign investment.

She also cited flagship infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, alongside social initiatives like conditional cash transfers, student loans, and affordable credit schemes.

Inflation, she noted, had eased from 34.6% to 23.7% as of May 2025.

She called on journalists to help amplify these gains as part of the drive towards a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

In his remarks, Gov AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq tasked the media on professionalism to safeguard national interest.

The Governor who was represented by his chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the media should maintain the habit of responsible journalism.

He said the power of the media to change situations for the better should not be undermined.

He expressed hope that the renewed hope agenda of the present administration will make life better for the common man.

Earlier, chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Abdulhakeem Garba, described his tenure as “six years of happiness and sadness, smiles and cries, which are the prices being paid as servant leaders”.

He thanked the Governor for consistent support and urged the state government to facilitate a media tour across all 193 wards or at least the 24 constituencies to showcase completed and ongoing projects.

The Oloriewe of Oro Kingdom and former Commissioner for Communication, Alhaji Abdulraheem Adedoyin, in a goodwill message, charged journalists to remain steadfast to professional ethics.

He encouraged the media to project both local and national progress, stressing the importance of positive reportage in nation-building.

One of the guest speakers and former presidential aspirant, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, represented by Abdulrazaq Hamzat, called on journalists to remain fearless in holding institutions accountable.

The honouree warned that institutional abuse, particularly in the academic sector, was a “silent killer of democracy” that stifles innovation, silences dissent, and erodes trust in governance.

He announced a cash donation to the Correspondents’ Chapel to “underscore the importance of an independent and vibrant press as a pillar of democracy”.
