2027: Why El-Rufai, others are plotting against Tinubu – Presidency

The Presidency said that former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and other opposition elements are plotting against President Bola Tinubu, because they were sidelined by the current administration.

In a post on his X handle, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga described El-Rufai’s involvement in the ongoing plot to unseat the President in the 2027 elelection as contradictory.

He recalled that the former governor had previously argued that four years was insufficient for any leader to effect meaningful change in governance in a complex country like Nigeria.

He stressed that President Tinubu has achieved significant progress within two years in office, particularly in the economy.

Onanuga wrote: “In contrast to the political laggards and underachievers who were once governors in Anambra, Rivers and Kaduna, President Tinubu and his team have implemented meaningful changes in our country over the past two years.”

He mentioned several economic indicators to support his claims, noting that foreign reserves had reached a 44-month high while the Nigerian stock market had created over N26 trillion in new wealth, and the All Share Index had risen from 53,000 points to more than 140,000.

The presidential aide argued that the government had harmonised exchange rates, recorded four consecutive months of declining inflation, and raised the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by N103.5 trillion in two years.

He also pointed to balance of payments surpluses and welfare policies, such as the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for students and cash transfers to vulnerable Nigerians.

Onanuga stressed that states and local governments had benefitted significantly from increased federal allocations which enable them to expand capital projects and create jobs.

“Our national revenue has grown remarkably and will hit new records this year and next year when the tax reform takes off. States and local councils are now getting more money from the centre, allowing them to fund capital projects and create more jobs. The governors said they have never had it so good,” he added.

The presidential aide, who described those pushing for Tinubu’s removal as “politically displaced and irrelevant,” insisted that such efforts would fail.

He also vowed that El-Rufai’s previous remarks would be used against him during electioneering campaigns.

President Bola Tinubu has approved automatic employment for the four children of the late Head of the Civil Service of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Dr Grace Adayilo who recently passed on.
