How APC chose the broom: Tinubu recounts clash with Buhari over party symbol
President Bola Tinubu has revealed that the broom, now the enduring emblem of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was the product of a spirited disagreement between himself and late former President Muhammadu Buhari during the party’s formative years.
Tinubu shared the backstory on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving members of The Buhari Organisation, led by former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura. Reflecting on the merger talks of 2013 that gave birth to the ruling party,
Tinubu recalled how he and Buhari locked horns over what symbol best captured the spirit of the new coalition.
“We disagreed to agree… We even argued about a symbol. He (Buhari) insisted on parliament, and I insisted on broom. He’s so stubborn,” Tinubu said with a laugh, drawing warm reactions from the audience.
The APC, officially registered in February 2013, was born out of the merger of four opposition parties — the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
As ACN leader and former Lagos State governor, Tinubu pushed for the broom as a unifying symbol, while Buhari, then at the helm of CPC, preferred a parliamentary image. Party leaders eventually settled on the broom, which came to represent collective action, unity, and a determination to sweep away corruption and bad governance.
Tinubu admitted that the ideological differences between the blocs often led to clashes, but the choice of the broom was a turning point that strengthened the coalition’s resolve. Party leaders credit the symbol with galvanising grassroots support that helped the APC dislodge the long-ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the historic 2015 elections, bringing Buhari to power.

Tuesday’s meeting, attended by northern APC figures such as Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda and former Governor Aminu Masari, was seen as both a tribute to Buhari’s legacy and a show of unity within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
