Osita Okechukwu: How Buhari persuaded CPC bloc to back Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition

Former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari played a decisive role in rallying support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election bid, even when some members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc opposed him.

Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television on Friday, Okechukwu recalled internal divisions within the CPC family ahead of the APC presidential primaries, especially concerning the support of key figures.

“Ordinarily, we could have done so. We could have done so in the sense that in 2021, when Abdullahi Adamu left, Al-Makura was, we were behind him. Suddenly, some elements within our system, within the same CPC family, you know, sometimes we have these currents. Some of them said that Tanko Al-Makura, His Excellency, was supporting Asiwaju and they do not support Asiwaju to be president,” Okechukwu recounted.

According to him, the matter was eventually taken to then-President Buhari for guidance.

“We took the brass tacks to President Buhari. President Buhari said, look, let us not bribe that. Therefore, Asiwaju, in the case interest, we owe him a duty to support him to the election day,” he explained.

Okechukwu stressed that Buhari’s consistent voter base was one of the factors that influenced the decision to back Tinubu.

“Because Buhari had demonstrated that he had a vote bank of 12.7 million votes in three consecutive elections. It was only in 2007 when my brother, Professor Maurice Iwu, made his own abracadabra and reduced it to like 7 million or something. And we came to the tribunal again, and luckily for us, after the tribunal had done its own bit, the greatest beneficiary of that rigged election, graciously and pathetically, I mean President Umar Musa Yar’Adua of blessed memory, graciously told the whole world that the election that brought me to power was flawed.”

The APC chieftain also explained the motivation behind a recent visit by members of Buhari’s political family to President Tinubu.

“The major objective of the meeting was that we, The Buhari Organization, and former members of the defunct CPC, we said the befitting burial for President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, gave President Buhari a blessed memory, is worth thanking him. We were aware that the immediate family of Buhari did so, but we said as an amalgam of Buhari’s political family, as a family we had to also go in a broader perspective as politicians,” he noted.

Okechukwu disclosed that the delegation, led by former Nasarawa governor Tanko Al-Makura, included former Katsina governor Aminu Masari, the governors of Katsina, Kebbi, and Niger states, as well as senior lawmakers.

He added that although Senator Salihu Mustapha of Kwara Central could not attend due to foreign engagements, he encouraged the group to proceed with the visit in the President’s interest.

The APC stalwart emphasized that despite the exit of some prominent figures such as former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, the majority of Buhari’s old political allies remain committed to Tinubu. “Because some of our members, our big brothers like Nasir El-Rufai and the rest had exited, we wanted to notify the country that 90% of us are still there. And we’re still committed to President Tinubu. A lot of people even do not remember that Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was our member.”
