Tinubu Administration commences construction of renewed hope housing project in Akwa Ibom

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has commenced construction of its Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The groundbreaking ceremony was led by governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state and attended by the managing director and chief executive officer of FHA, Oyetunde Ojo.

In a statement on Friday, November 7, FHA Public Relations Officer (PRO) Kenneth Chigelu reported that Ojo praised governor Eno for his commitment to the welfare of his people, particularly in housing provision.

He highlighted that the governor had provided the FHA with land free of charge and pledged continued support to ensure the project’s success.

Ojo said, “On 2nd May 2024, when I led my management team to seek the buy-in and collaboration of Akwa Ibom State for our Renewed Hope Housing agenda, governor Umo Eno welcomed us with encouragement that we had not experienced elsewhere.”

He added that the decision to launch the renewed hope housing programme in Akwa Ibom was a deliberate gesture to reciprocate the governor’s goodwill and partnership.

“We are beginning the fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to renew the hope of Nigerians by providing livable and affordable houses. Decent shelter is crucial for productivity and quality of life,” Ojo said.

According to Ojo, the FHA has completed procurement for housing construction across all six geopolitical zones, with similar groundbreaking ceremonies planned for Kaduna, Abia, Ogun, Ekiti, Kogi, and Adamawa States.

He further stated that the authority is completing and commissioning inherited projects, in line with president Tinubu’s directive that the days of abandoned projects are over.

Describing the Akwa Ibom project as more than another housing estate, Ojo said it represents a livable and affordable environment reflecting the signature of the FHA.

The FHA chief also commended governor Eno for enabling the authority to establish a presence in Akwa Ibom for the first time in its over 50-year history.

He noted that the project would create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the state.

Governor Eno, in his remarks, thanked president Tinubu for approving the renewed hope housing scheme and the FHA for choosing Akwa Ibom as the launch site.

He said such federal initiatives align with his administration’s commitment to collaborate with the federal government in tackling the housing deficit and accelerating development.

He also revealed that the federal ministry of housing and urban development had been allocated 50 hectares of land for its own housing project.

Eno said, “Our civil servants are dear to us, which is why we are investing in housing.

“We already have aviation city, judicial city, legislative, and executive estates to accommodate our people.”

The governor assured that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of residents and pledged to extend the state’s robust security measures to protect the housing site.

The renewed hope housing scheme is a flagship initiative of president Tinubu’s administration, designed to address Nigeria’s housing deficit and promote inclusive homeownership.

Implemented through the FHA and the federal ministry of housing and urban development, the programme aims to deliver affordable, quality, and sustainable homes for low- and middle-income earners across all six geopolitical zones.

Under the initiative, the federal government partners with state governments to provide land and supporting infrastructure, while the FHA manages construction and delivery.

The programme is expected to create jobs, strengthen local building industries, and contribute to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on sustainable cities and communities.
