Nigeria’s democracy not under threat – Wike slams Turaki

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims that Nigeria’s democratic system is in danger, describing comments made by factional PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, as irresponsible political theatrics aimed at raising national anxiety.

Wike made the remarks in Abuja on Wednesday, during a courtesy visit by the Board and Management of the South-South Development Commission, SSDC.

The delegation was led by Chairman Prince Chinudom Nwuche and Managing Director Ms Usoro Akpabio.

Akpabio, who began her public service career at the FCT Administration in 2006, said the visit was intended to strengthen institutional cooperation, adding that the new Commission would “deepen collaborations with federal MDAs and key stakeholders to ensure the South South remains at the forefront of policy implementation and development planning.”

Using the occasion to address Turaki’s controversial televised statements, Wike condemned what he termed “dangerous and irresponsible political rhetoric,” noting Turaki had accused the federal government of allowing genocide against Christians and suggested foreign intervention in Nigeria’s democracy.

According to the Minister, such narratives distort the nation’s image and amount to a direct security risk.

He said: “Look at what someone said yesterday. You have internal crises in your own party, yet you go on national television claiming there is genocide against Christians… This is a national security threat. Some are even calling Trump to ‘save their democracy’. How can you call an outsider to save you when you can’t obey a simple court order?”

Wike insisted Nigeria’s democracy remains stable, stressing that the real danger comes from politicians who inflame public sentiment for personal advantage.

He also urged SSDC officials to remain focused on their mandate and avoid the pitfalls that plagued other regional intervention agencies, warning against corruption, misplaced priorities and weakened internal cohesion.

He said: “The development of your region depends heavily on your commitment… The only way to justify your appointment, and make the President proud, is to work tirelessly to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The Minister criticised past performance of bodies like the NDDC, recalling how huge sums of money made little impact due to patronage-driven contracts and abandoned projects. He urged the SSDC to avoid duplication of state projects, focus on community needs and maintain loyalty to the federal government.

“Don’t go and do streets that lead only to one person’s house… Don’t divide your loyalty. Your loyalty is to the President who appointed you,” he added.

Wike, who admitted facing political attacks since assuming office, said he remains committed to his responsibilities.

“I am here as Minister because I knew I could do the work. And yes, you will step on toes. But I’m not afraid as long as I’m doing the right thing,” he said.

He further cautioned the SSDC board about financial mismanagement, warning that conflicts often emerge once large sums are released.

“Today, you are united because there’s no project and no money yet. But the moment ₦50 billion drops and someone spends it without approval, fights will start. Don’t let that be your legacy,” he said.

In her response, Akpabio assured the Minister that the SSDC would provide a trustworthy, development-driven leadership.

“On behalf of the good people of the South-South Development Commission, be assured that we are fully committed to delivering on our mandate to drive regional development and economic growth,” she stated.
