CAN commends Tinubu on improved security, says Christmas passed without attacks

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu security efforts, saying recent steps to strengthen the country’s security have helped reduce attacks, especially during the Christmas season.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said this while speaking to journalists on Friday after meeting President Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at their residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

He said the absence of attacks reflected renewed attention to the nation’s security system.

“We are seeing the renewed efforts and commitment to strengthen the security architecture and to ensure that Nigerians are going out in peace and coming back in peace.

“Of course there is still a lot to be done but we know that the President has started very well and we hope pray that this will be sustained and we hope that maybe by next year we will be able to see visible results of what is being done now,” he said.

Okoh said this year’s Christmas stood out because Christians were not alerted to attacks on churches, a situation he described as unusual compared to previous years.

He added, “I can tell you that this Christmas happened to be the first Christmas in many years that we are not woken up with phone call in the midnight to say that a church was attacked and it is a testimony we must share and we hope and pray that this will continue.”

Continuing, the CAN President noted that while security challenges remain, there is hope that Tinubu’s security efforts will yield clearer results in the coming year.

Meanwhile, Tribune Online reports that the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has supported the recent joint airstrikes carried out by Nigerian and United States military forces against ISIS elements in North-West Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, Afenifere described the operation as a response to years of insecurity that affected communities across the region.

“Afenifere unequivocally supports this decisive action, which comes after years of relentless insecurity that has held communities hostage and undermined the very fabric of the nation,” the group said.
