Tinubu committed to repositioning institutions for skilled workforce — Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has said President Bola Tinubu is unwavering in his commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s institutions to produce the skilled workforce needed for the development of the country.

Alausa also said the Federal Ministry of Education has launched the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) aimed at systemic reform across basic, technical, vocational, teacher and tertiary education.

The Minister stated this on Friday during the commissioning of TetFund and Federal Appropriation budget-funded projects at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

The commissioned projects included the Senate Building, University Library, ICT Centre, and the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University Health Centre, University Gate and Road, College of Medicine and University Electrification.

Alausa noted that health sciences are a crucial pillar of NESRI, adding that medical education is a national security priority and a measure of a nation’s civilisation.

The minister added that President Tinubu has constantly emphasised the expansion of medical training institutions, improvement of clinical learning environments and the modernisation of the health sciences infrastructure.

He said, “The President has been unwavering in his commitment to repositioning our institutions to produce the skilled workforce needed for Nigeria’s technological, economic, and health-sector advancement.

“In support of this presidential mandate, the Federal Ministry of Education launched the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), our comprehensive blueprint for systemic reform across basic, technical, vocational, teacher, and tertiary education.

“Health sciences education is a crucial pillar of NESRI, and today’s commissioning exemplifies precisely the kind of infrastructure and academic strengthening that the Initiative seeks to scale nationwide.

“No country can grow beyond the quality of its health workforce. Medical education is not merely an academic discipline; it is a national security priority, an economic growth engine, and a measure of a nation’s civilisation.”

The Minister added that a robust medical education system “reduces dependence on foreign medical care and curbs medical tourism;

Strengthens our public health systems to respond to local and global health crises;

drives biomedical research and innovation; creates high-skilled jobs and attracts investment into the health economy, and ensures a healthy, productive population essential for national development.”

Alausa commended the Vice-Chancellor, management and staff of the great institution for their steadfast commitment to excellence, adding that their “resilience and vision have brought us to this historic moment”.

In his address, the chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) Board of Trustees, Aminu Bello Masari, lauded Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to educational development in Nigeria.

The former Katsina state governor said the President’s continued support for TetFund has enabled the Fund to invest strategically in addressing critical infrastructural and academic needs across tertiary Institutions over the past two years.

He added that the organisation remains committed to supporting public Tertiary Institutions as they educate and equip learners for a dynamic future.

According to him, “the commissioning of these projects signifies meaningful progress toward our mission of making Nigerian Tertiary Institutions globally relevant and competitive, especially in a world defined by rapid technological advancement and the expanding influence of Artificial Intelligence.

“Today, the Honourable Minister is commissioning eight landmark projects executed with TETFund support, at a total cost of Seven billion, fifty million, three hundred and sixty-eight thousand, seven hundred and thirty-six naira (N7,050,368,736).”

Masari urged the management, staff, and students to ensure proper maintenance and protection of these facilities, noting that sustaining the investments is essential to prevent premature deterioration and to safeguard their long-term value.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Akeem Lasisi, in his remarks, said four hundred and fifty-three students of the institution are benefiting from the NELFund support in the current year.

The VC stated that most of the commissioned infrastructure has been put to use and contributed to the school’s success in the just concluded National University Commission Accreditation exercise.

Lasisi, however, said the university is faced with the issue of the source of power for the infrastructure.

“We are in desperate need of an inverter and solar power as an alternative source of energy, as the cost of diesel is progressively becoming unbearable. I will appreciate your intervention on this matter, sir,” he told the Minister.
