Running Nigeria enormous workload, says Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, described running Nigeria as an enormous workload, saying he has been extremely busy.

He made the remark while apologising for delaying the inauguration of a new Federal Character Commission board.

“Truly, it is a very good afternoon. First of all, I apologise to you for delaying the inauguration,” Tinubu said.

“The workload of this country is enormous, and you are part and parcel of it.”

At a ceremony held at the State House, Abuja on Thursday, the President administered the oath of office to the FCC Chairman, Hulayat Omidiran, and 37 commissioners representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

While urging the appointees  to be fair, diligent, committed, and patriotic in the discharge of their duties, Tinubu described the commission as representing “the conscience of our nation,” noting that its assignment is to promote and stabilise the conscience of the country.

He said, “What you represent here today is the conscience of our nation. What you are being assigned to do is to promote and stabilise the conscience of this country, to be fair, diligent, committed and patriotic.

“A nation that needs its own people has no good faith that we have that is better than our people.

“We have the human resources, we have the ability, the capacity and the endowment from God to build our country.”

Tinubu urged the new appointees to continually ask themselves what they can contribute to the development, growth, stability, and unity of Nigeria.

Borrowing from former United States President John F. Kennedy’s famous 1961 inaugural address, Tinubu said, “We must, at each time, ask ourselves: What is our contribution to the development and growth, stability and unity of this country?”

He explained, “If I can borrow from John F. Kennedy, who asked the Americans, and I’m asking you to ask yourself, not all the time what can this country do for you, but what you can do for the country to make it greater.”

The President noted that the commission reflects “the federal character, the complexity, the diversity of this country,” adding that the critical assignment now rests in their hands.

Responding, Omidiran assured the President that the commission would discharge its constitutional responsibility diligently in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.

She said, “I wish to assure Mr. President that under my leadership, the Commission will discharge its constitutional responsibility diligently in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration.

“On behalf of all of us, we promise to promote the strength of our diversity, and renew the hope and aspirations of Nigerians in carrying out our constitutional mandates under your guidance.”

Omidiran also vowed that by the end of her tenure, every Nigerian will have a sense of ownership of the country.

Speaking to journalists after her inauguration at the State House, Omidiran said the commission would ensure equitable distribution of resources to every part of the country to engender inclusivity.

The former lawmaker said, “The Federal Character Commission was formed by patriotic Nigerians who believe that there should be a body to ensure equitable distribution of every good thing.

“Nigeria has good things in abundance, but it must go round every nook and cranny of Nigeria to engender inclusivity, so that everybody will know that Nigeria is theirs and they will own the country.”

Omidiran expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for finding her and the commissioners worthy of the assignment, adding that the President’s charge was a reminder of what the Act establishing the commission had mandated them to do.

“What Mr. President told us is just to remind us of what the Act has mandated us to do, and we are fully ready to do it by the grace of God,” she said.

“At the end of this tenure, every Nigerian will own Nigeria.“

President Bola Tinubu has approved automatic employment for the four children of the late Head of the Civil Service of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Dr Grace Adayilo who recently passed on.
