Tinubu has ended 38 years of broken promises in South-east — Umahi
Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in an Interview with blueprint.ng correspondent, in Abakaliki, after inspection of federal road projects cutting across Delta, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states insists President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has broken the jinx of abandoned road construction and restored confidence in national infrastructure delivery.
You have been inspecting projects for days. What exactly is going on in the Southeast?
What is happening is a revolution. For the first time, Mr President has provided the funding, the technology and the political will to fix roads that were abandoned for decades. We have taken the excuses off the table. Contractors now know the era of failed work is over. This government has drawn a red line against failed roads.
What is your impression of the 48km concrete rehabilitation in Asaba?
The quality is good, but the pace must increase. That project received a ₦50 billion intervention from Mr President. I am satisfied with the engineering but not with productivity. We are insisting on daily targets. Nigeria deserves speed and quality at the same time.
Second Niger Bridge Bypass: “50% Commissioning by April”
Where does the Second Niger Bridge bypass stand?
President Tinubu released 30 percent of the funding immediately, and we are building two bridges and two flyovers along that 17.5km bypass. Our target is to commission 50 percent by April 20. That road will finally decongest the bridge and end the Onitsha gridlock.
The Enugu–Onitsha road has been a national embarrassment. What’s different now?
What’s different is leadership. This project sat for 38 years under various governments. Today, 50km have been done under the MTN tax credit scheme. The first 15km will be completed in two weeks, with solar lighting installed on the first five kilometres. Every section of that road, including bypasses, must be delivered. No excuses.
Security and Innovation
How is the ministry dealing with vandalism and night travel insecurity?
For the first time, we’re installing CCTV surveillance, solar lighting and patrol systems on federal roads. It has started on Third Mainland Bridge and Second Niger Bridge, and we are rolling it out nationwide. We cannot rehabilitate roads for criminals to occupy.
What’s the status of the strategic corridor of Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway?
We’ve completed 61km on one lane and 3km on the return lane. We are redesigning the entire road: concrete shoulders, asphalt base layers, full lighting. Nigerians will see visible progress every month.
Enugu–Ebonyi–Ogoja Dualisation
Is the Federal Government collaborating with states?
Absolutely. Governor Peter Mbah has dualised the road up to the state boundary. The federal government is handling the rest with an N180 billion contract. Phase one must finish this year. No delays, no variations.
“Even with your eyes closed, you can feel the changes”
Many people complain that they have heard similar assurances in the past are given same assurance?
I understand that scepticism. The Southeast has been disappointed for decades. But this is not the same era. Even with your eyes closed, you will feel what Mr President is doing — bridges rising, roads being completed, and abandoned projects revived.
This is the end of empty promises.
What’s your summation on entire projects?
The President has made a commitment to Nigerians — no region will be left behind. The Southeast is witnessing proof of that commitment every day.
