Tinubu: State Police, Forest Guards Key to Ending Banditry in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his support for decentralised policing and the establishment of properly regulated forest guards as part of long-term solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking in his New Year message, Tinubu said tackling terrorism, banditry, and related crimes would require innovative approaches that reflect Nigeria’s complex security environment.

“I continue to believe that a decentralised policing system, with appropriate safeguards, complemented by properly regulated forest guards and anchored on accountability, is critical to effectively addressing insecurity,” the President said.

He noted that while security agencies had recorded successes against criminal and terrorist groups, sustained peace would require stronger intelligence gathering, community cooperation, and localised security structures.

Tinubu added that his administration would continue to work with the National Assembly, state governments, and other stakeholders to advance reforms that strengthen internal security without undermining democratic accountability.

The President also urged Nigerians to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information, stressing that security was a collective responsibility requiring a whole-of-society approach.
