Tokunbo Abiru: Tinubu’s reforms yielding gains, stabilising economy

Tokunbo Abiru, senator representing Lagos east, says President Bola Tinubu’s macroeconomic reforms are producing positive results and stabilising the nation’s economy.

Speaking during the Lagos east APC stakeholders’ meeting, which held on Thursday in Ikosi-Isheri, Magodo, Abiru, who is chairman of the senate committee on banking, insurance and other financial institutions, described Tinubu’s leadership since May 2023 as the “calm after the storm”.

He said the administration took “bold but necessary” decisions — including fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange unification, and fiscal/tax restructuring — to prevent economic collapse and set the stage for sustainable growth.

“These reforms have started to produce measurable gains, including easing inflation, particularly food inflation, greater exchange rate transparency, improved external reserves and renewed investor confidence,” Abiru said.

He added that GDP growth has remained positive while improved subnational revenues are beginning to ease pressure on households and small businesses.

The senator called on APC leaders to mobilise residents for the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) second phase of continuous voter registration and the party’s e-registration exercise, saying “data-driven planning is critical to electoral success”.

He also endorsed the funding structure proposed by the Lagos east APC leadership, noting the need for predictable and transparent party financing.

Abiru presented his stewardship report, anchored on three pillars: legislation, empowerment and endowment.

The legislator said he has sponsored and co-sponsored key bills, including the Insurance Industry Reforms Act and Copyright Amendment Act, as well as ongoing amendments to BOFIA, NEXIM and NAICOM.

On constituency projects, Abiru said over 35 schools have benefited from classroom construction and rehabilitation.

He added that several health facilities — including 40-bed hospitals and primary health centres — have been built or upgraded across the district.

Abiru said 48 cooperative societies each received a N10 million take-off grant (totalling N480 million) last December to promote grassroots economic inclusion.
