2027: We must avoid glitches in transmission of results — Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, said Nigeria must avoid technical glitches in the transmission of election results as he signed the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 into law, affirming that electronic transmission remains supportive and not a replacement for manual collation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu stressed that while technology plays an important role in modern elections, the integrity of the process ultimately rests on human management and transparency.
Tinubu said; “Essentially, what we are looking at is the transmission of manual results, and we must avoid glitches. Nigeria will flourish and continue to nurture this democracy for prosperity and stability.”
The signing comes days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the timetable for the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu commended the National Assembly for what he described as a rigorous legislative process, noting that the reforms were aimed at preventing voter disenfranchisement and ensuring stability.
“No matter how good a system is, it is managed by people… You are not going to be talking to a computer; you are going to be talking to human beings who announce the results,” he said.
The amendment was passed amid intense public debate over mandatory real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units. Civil society organisations and opposition figures had pushed for full electronic transmission, arguing it would reduce manipulation and enhance credibility.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress and other stakeholders expressed concerns about network limitations in remote areas, supporting a hybrid system that retains manual collation where electronic transmission fails.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the amended Act guarantees that every vote will count by mandating the electronic transmission of polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal while maintaining the EC8A forms as the primary source of collation.
He said the law allows results to be uploaded once connectivity is available, ensuring transparency and enabling Nigerians to compare polling unit results with those collated at higher levels.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, said the amendment reduced the election notice period from 360 days to 300 days, a move that could shift presidential and National Assembly elections to January 2027 to avoid overlap with Ramadan.
Meanwhile, former Resident Electoral Commissioner in Cross River State, Mike Igini, faulted the retention of manual collation as a backup, warning that it could create loopholes and endanger ad hoc staff.
Speaking on Arise Television, Igini described the amendment as “a recipe for chaos” and urged the judiciary to defend electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 polls.
INEC has scheduled the 2027 general elections for February 20 for Presidential and National Assembly polls and March 6 for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
