Pro-Tinubu Group: Quick Assent To Electoral Act Boosts 2027 Polls Preparation

The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) said President Bola Tinubu’s swift assent to the 2026 Electoral Act will enhance preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The group commended the President for signing the amendment within 24 hours of its passage by the National Assembly.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Emeka Nwankpa, and Secretary, Dapo Okubanjo, TMSG described the move as a demonstration of political will.

“We see the decision by President Bola Tinubu to sign the reworked 2022 Electoral Act within hours of its passage as a demonstration of political will,” it said.

The group expressed confidence that the amended law would enable INEC to adopt new provisions ahead of the 2027 polls.

It noted that electronic transmission of results, previously contentious, had now been codified in the law.

“For the first time, the country’s electoral law recognises the use of BVAS and the IREV portal, which were guidelines in 2023,” the group said.

TMSG added that the Act provides for electronic transmission of results, with manual transmission of Form EC8A as backup where technology fails.

“While technology is important, the onus lies on those manning the process to ensure that votes truly count,” it stated.

The group said the law streamlines party primaries to consensus or direct methods and provides for early release of funds to INEC.

It also cited stricter sanctions for electoral offences, reinforced control of over-voting and reduction of election notice period from 360 to 300 days.

TMSG expressed optimism that INEC would leverage the new law to deliver credible and widely acceptable elections in 2027. (NAN)
