Tinubu intentional about resuscitating Nigeria’s sports sector, says Adeboye
Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Grassroots Sports, Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, has explained that the president is bent on ensuring the revival of Nigerian sports, hence the “deliberate investment and supervision” of the sector.
Speaking at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Cup during the Nigeria versus Uzbekistan Davis Cup playoff at the weekend, Adeboye, who assured Nigerians that they would start seeing the results of the efforts the president’s team is putting in resuscitating the sector, said that part of the solution to the problems adopted by the Federal Government is “ensuring that tested technocrats are given the mandate to manage the critical areas.”
“I have been working together with my colleagues, National Sports Commission (NSC) chairman, Shehu Dikko, and the director general, Bukola Olapade.
“When President Tinubu came in, we sat down together to map out the way forward. And the way forward is for us to concentrate on grassroots sports development, and you can see a lot of talent now coming out from all sports.
“Nigerian sports is now dominated by youthful athletes with the potential to grow into world champions. We have already started seeing the results in the Super Eagles, whose average age is 22.
“The current Davis Cup players are among the youngest in the history of Nigerian tennis, and across all sports are littered the results of this deliberate growth pattern.”
Adeboye also said that President Tinubu’s reward pattern has also “enticed many youngmen and women to take to sports, knowing that the country will reward them adequately if they excel and bring honours to the country.
