Tinubu Allots Abuja Land To Envoys As Wike Urges Diplomats To Rebrand Nigeria

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr Nyesom Wike, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the allocation of land to ambassadors and high commissioners-designate in Abuja, in a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic engagement and anchoring foreign missions more firmly in Nigeria’s capital.

Wike disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the envoys, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja, where he charged the diplomats to project a positive image of Nigeria abroad.

“You are the mirror of this country. The way the world sees you is the way it will see Nigeria,” Wike said, stressing that the envoys bear the responsibility of shaping global perceptions of the country at a critical moment in its development trajectory.

He said the land allocation was part of broader efforts to deepen diplomatic relations and encourage sustained engagement between Nigeria and the international community, while also providing a practical base for envoys when they return home for official engagements.

The minister urged theambassadors-designate to align their missions with the administration’s economic diplomacy drive, particularly in attracting foreign investment and building international partnerships.

“Mr President has travelled extensively to attract investment. It is now your responsibility to reinforce that effort by building confidence in Nigeria as a viable destination for investment,” he said.
Wike also addressed concerns about Nigeria’s democratic trajectory, dismissing suggestions of a drift towards a one-party state.

“Nigeria remains a multi-party democracy. There is no plan to turn the country into a one-party state. You must communicate this clearly wherever you serve,” he said.

Highlighting ongoing development in the Federal Capital Territory, the minister pointed to expanding infrastructure and improved connectivity across the six area councils, noting that Abuja is being repositioned to compete with leading global capitals.

He called on the envoys to leverage opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture and waste management, noting that vast arable land within the FCT remains largely untapped.

“There is enormous agricultural potential in areas like Gwagwalada and Kwali, but investment is still limited. We need your support to attract investors and unlock these opportunities,” he added.

Wike further disclosed that the FCT Administration is exploring partnerships with countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as well as the European Commission, to drive development initiatives in the territory.

Expressing optimism about the country’s outlook, he said Nigeria would emerge stronger, more united, and stable in the coming years.

Earlier, Ahmed said the visit formed part of the induction programme for the envoys, designed to familiarise them with the strategic importance of the FCT as both the administrative and diplomatic hub of Nigeria.

“Our ambassadors and high commissioners have been entrusted with representing Nigeria at a pivotal moment,” he said, noting that Abuja remains central to how the country is perceived internationally.

He commended the ongoing transformation of the capital under Wike, particularly in infrastructure, urban management, and service delivery, adding that such progress strengthens the work of Nigeria’s missions abroad.

Ahmed also called for closer collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the FCT Administration, urging the envoys to promote Abuja as a destination for investment, tourism, and international cooperation.

The engagement, he said, underscores the need to align Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives with domestic development priorities, especially in positioning Abuja as a world-class capital.
