2027: Labour coalition declares support for Tinubu

Working People United (WOPU), a coalition of labour leaders, professionals, artisans, and working Nigerians, has formally thrown its weight behind the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group made this declaration during a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri Ph.D, where it presented its vision, structure, and rationale for mobilizing nationwide support for the President’s second term.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the

National President of WOPU, Comr. Williams Akporeha, in a statement signed by Nneamaka Okafor, said the movement was established to provide a broader, more inclusive platform for working Nigerians to actively participate in shaping the country’s political direction beyond traditional labour union frameworks. He noted that the coalition draws membership from across multiple sectors, including strong representation from labour unions in the oil and gas industry, as well as other key segments of the workforce.

Comr. Akporeha stated that WOPU’s endorsement of President Tinubu is anchored on a firm belief in the administration’s long-term vision for economic stability and national growth. While acknowledging the current economic challenges, he emphasized that the reforms being implemented are necessary to prevent deeper structural setbacks and to reposition the country for sustainable development.

He further outlined the group’s strategy to mobilize grassroots support nationwide, leveraging its expansive network to reach working-class communities, drive voter education, and encourage active participation in the democratic process.

In his response, Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri commended the group for its organization and commitment to national development. He recognized the importance of labour and grassroots movements in shaping public engagement and reaffirmed his readiness to support constructive collaboration. The Minister also assured the delegation of open lines of communication and operational support where necessary.

The meeting also highlighted the role of diaspora engagement, with WOPU noting that its international network will complement domestic mobilization efforts by informing Nigerians abroad and strengthening global perception of the country’s progress.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to the movement’s objectives and pledged active involvement in its activities across the country, rallying under the slogan: “Working People United — Time for a Greater Nigeria.”
