Tinubu has removed poverty as barrier to education, says Minister
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, has said that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, no child should use financial constraints as excuse for not going to school.
She said government interventions such as Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which gives loans to students in tertiary institutions, have removed poverty as a barrier to schooling.
Speaking on Friday during an oversight visit to Government Girls College Kano and Government Girls Secondary School Dukawuya under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, Prof. Ahmad said tuition fees at tertiary institutions are now covered through the stipends provided to students for daily subsistence.
“Poverty is no more an excuse not to go to school. Because not only is your tuition paid, but also stipend is given to you for daily subsistence, transportation, and study materials,” she told students, urging them to take advantage of the opportunities.
The Minister explained that beyond tuition support, government has introduced free online skill acquisition programmes with monthly stipends and starter packs to empower young people before and after tertiary education.
“Girls are the future in terms of ensuring societal good. We must motivate them to focus on their studies and utilise these facilities diligently,” she added.
During the inspection, Ahmad directed principals and School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) to fix lapses observed in renovated classrooms, laboratories, and WASH facilities within three weeks, warning against locking up refurbished laboratories and computer centres meant for students.
The minister is expected to brief Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on the observations, with assurances that the state government will act swiftly to ensure libraries and laboratories are fully functional.
On his part, Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, said the state has awarded contracts worth ₦24 billion for the construction of 49 new schools and is set to renovate 300 others across 484 wards in the state.
He noted that since the declaration of a state of emergency on education in 2023, the sector has consistently received over 30% of the state’s budget.
AGILE National Coordinator, Amina Buba Haruna, disclosed that 100 schools in Kano have been equipped with solar-powered digital literacy facilities, with approval secured for another 180.
She also confirmed plans for 89 new girls’ secondary schools within a year.
The national coordinator added that as a World Bank–supported project in Nigeria, AGILE is aimed at improving access to quality education for adolescent girls in some selected states of the country.
