We’ve 12.9 million verified members in APC — Yilwatda
National chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has said the ruling party currently has 12.9 million verified registered members, maintaining that the figure places the APC ahead of all opposition parties in Nigeria.
Yilwatda made the disclosure during an interview on ARISE News, where he argued that the APC remains the most organised political party in the country with a stronger membership base than its rivals.
“We have about 12.9 million registered voters that were submitted to INEC,” he said.
He said available records showed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has about 2.4 million members, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has 1.6 million members. He added that the Labour Party has about 1.3 million members, while the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has around 700,000.
“So these are the data. If you put all these political parties together, they don’t add up to APC’s registered members,” Yilwatda stated.
The APC chairman further claimed that the ruling party is the only political party in the country operating a membership register fully verified through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
“But even the most important thing in our own case is that we have verified data. All our data of our members are verified by NIMC.”
Yilwatda explained that individuals seeking APC membership are subjected to a verification process similar to those used for obtaining passports, opening bank accounts and processing driver’s licences.
“APC is the only political party that sources data from NIMC, which means that you cannot come unverified,” he added.
Speaking on the APC presidential primary that produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s candidate, Yilwatda defended the credibility of the exercise and dismissed criticisms surrounding the process.
He also reacted to viral videos questioning the authenticity of the primary election results, insisting that such clips did not reflect the official figures.
“People can mimic counting at any point. People can do their drama. But I work with data,” he said.
Yilwatda also denied claims that the APC was responsible for the internal crises rocking opposition parties across the country.
“The self-implosion was in the opposition,” he stated.
He maintained that the APC remained stable despite disagreements that emerged after some of its primary elections, noting that the party intentionally delayed the announcement of winners in certain contests to allow appeal committees conclude reviews of petitions.
