Democracy Day will showcase Tinubu’s achievements – FG

The Federal Government has said this year’s Democracy Day celebration will provide an opportunity to showcase the achievements of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration and highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, stated this on Tuesday while inaugurating the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for the 27th Democracy Day celebration in Abuja.

Akume said the June 12 celebration would enable the government to demonstrate to Nigerians the gains recorded in consolidating democracy, implementing reforms and repositioning the country despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

He said Democracy Day is not only a time to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey but also an avenue for the government to reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals, institutional strengthening and sustainable development.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose sacrifice contributed to the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The SGF noted that the country’s democratic institutions were built on the sacrifices of patriots who fought for democratic governance, adding that the annual celebration remains a fitting way to honour their legacy while assessing the nation’s democratic progress.
