Tinubu praises navy at 70, says anti-oil theft operations boost production, revenue

President Bola Tinubu says the Nigerian Navy’s sustained operations against crude oil theft and maritime crime have boosted oil production, increased national revenue and strengthened investor confidence.

According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesperson, Tinubu spoke on Monday at the 2026 international fleet review held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos as part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary.

The president, who served as the reviewing officer at the event, also inaugurated three naval vessels — NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila and NNS Gurara.

He commended the navy for its role in combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, maritime smuggling and other transnational crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

“Through the effective integration of surveillance systems, rapid response mechanisms and robust enforcement operations, you have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and associated maritime crimes,” the statement reads.

“These achievements have enhanced the security of our littoral communities and contributed to increased oil production, thereby supporting national economic growth.”

The president described the navy as an indispensable pillar of national and regional security, citing its contributions to counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations across the country.

He praised the special boat service for its professionalism in executing complex missions and expressed confidence that the recent deployment of Nigerian Navy marines to operational theatres would further strengthen security operations.

The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the navy through investments in modern platforms, advanced technology, personnel welfare, training and capacity development.

He congratulated Idi Abbas, the chief of naval staff; officers; ratings; veterans; and families of naval personnel on the navy’s 70th anniversary and urged them to remain committed to national service.

In his remarks, Abbas attributed the navy’s recent operational successes to strategic investments, policy support and leadership from the Tinubu administration.

He said the acquisition of modern platforms, improved surveillance systems and collaboration among security agencies had enhanced Nigeria’s maritime security architecture.

The naval chief said the measures had enabled the service to intensify efforts against piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, sea robbery and other maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

Dignitaries at the event included Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos; AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, governor of Kwara and chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF); Bello Matawalle, minister of state for defence; Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA); and service chiefs.

Also in attendance were naval chiefs from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, as well as delegations from European countries.
